What's Next

sappi - the art of adding value

Our specialists unfold the secret(s) behind our cover...

John Brown (Publisher of What’s Next) explains the idea behind the cover of our latest issue: "The outer cover had a full soft touch lamination. Over this, we applied a spot gloss UV and directly on top of this the silver scratch-off. The spot gloss UV was required to allow the scratch off to be removed cleanly without leaving residue behind. The inner covers had a simple machine seal to prevent rubbing when the magazine was bound. The covers were printed sheet-fed and the laminate, spot gloss UV and scratch-off were all applied offline."

In "touch" with the latest trends...

Soft Touch is a laminated finish that creates a luxurious, high-quality feel to the surface of any printed sheet. Since it’s a clear film that has the appearance of a dull rich matt finish, it’s perfectly suited for the packaging of luxury goods as it provides an instant "up-market" feel to any product.

As more tactile and original finishes are sought, this product is a very welcomed solution. Soft Touch really has a great effect on people -- they want to pick it up and not put it down. Add to this the fact that it has such great scuff resistance, the extra attention that this film demands simply won't be an issue.

Aside from its outstanding and engaging content, What’s Next Issue 4 is proof of the status of print as a VIP medium. For both publisher and printer, it was a challenge as well as an utterly rewarding task. As our printer, Artoos, states...

Ann Van De Velde (Artoos): "We really enjoyed the printing and finishing of What’s Next 4. It was a high-quality project that challenged us to stay focused and meet the high standards we set for ourselves. Projects like these motivate us to aim for better and never settle for mediocrity."
